Elon Musk fired most of Twitter’s contract workers over the weekend without giving permanent employees any notice, according to a report by CNBC.
The social-media platform let go of more than 4,000 contractors. The workers only found out when they lost access to Slack and other office systems, CNBC said, citing internal company memos.
The job cuts come after Musk, who is also CEO of
Tesla
(ticker: TSLA), had already let go of about half the firm’s permanent employees since acquiring the company on Oct. 28.
Separately, NBC reported that Musk had fired a Twitter engineer who had disagreed with him. Eric Frohnhoefer disputed Musk’s assertion that Twitter performed poorly on Android phones. On Monday, he tweeted that he had been locked out of his computer.
Musk has been making sweeping changes at Twitter since buying it for $44 billion. He has also changed labels and verifications. Some advertisers have been stepping away from the platform on concerns about content moderation.
Twitter didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment.
